About the Course

Course Description

For decades, traditional diagnostic approaches have guided the profession, often requiring clinicians to make treatment decisions based on limited diagnostic information. This can introduce subjectivity into the diagnostic process and may affect patient confidence. Traditional diagnostic methods have also tended to support a more reactive rather than predictive and preventive approach to care.

The "watch and wait" approach has long been a common response to early enamel lesions. Advances in diagnostic imaging, AI technology, and minimally invasive treatment protocols now provide clinicians with additional tools to identify and manage carious lesions before cavitation occurs.

This course examines evidence-based approaches to early caries detection and intervention. Participants will explore the limitations of conventional diagnostic methods, the application of advanced diagnostic technologies, and minimally invasive treatment protocols designed to arrest caries progression and support remineralization when clinically appropriate.

Learning Topics

  • Recognize the limitations of conventional caries diagnostics and evaluate the role of early intervention for managing enamel lesions
  • Evaluate the use of advanced technologies, including AI-assisted imaging and enhanced diagnostic tools, to support early caries detection
  • Discuss minimally invasive treatment protocols designed to arrest early carious lesions and support remineralization, when clinically appropriate
  • Apply evidence-based, minimally invasive approaches to the management of incipient caries
  • Discuss strategies for communicating the value of early detection, early intervention, and long-term tooth preservation with patients
